Celtic legend Charlie Mulgrew fires dig at Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti, Kevin Thomson disagrees with him

Celtic icon Charlie Mulgrew has taken a shot at Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti ahead of the Old Firm derby on Sunday.

Mulgrew has brought up his enigmatic nature as he shows up in big games but is not consistent over the course of a season.

Since moving to Ibrox in the summer from Everton, Chermiti has scored seven goals in 30 appearances for the Gers.

Of those strikes, six have come against Hearts and Celtic, with the other one being a goal at Ibrox against Kilmarnock back in October.

Charlie Mulgrew and Kevin Thomson disagree about Chermiti’s potential

Due to his erratic goal-scoring nature, Mulgrew does not see the 21-year-old becoming a big player at the club.

However, the former Hoops centre-back fails to take into account the fact that it is the striker’s first season at the club.

He was also signed by a different manager who played a particular style of football and Danny Rohl does seem to have finally figured out how to get the best out of him.

That said, Mulgrew did acknowledge that it is a good sign that Chermiti shows up for the big games.

Without saying too many words, Kevin Thomson managed to get his point across and asserted that the Portuguese could become an important first-team player at Gers.

Mulgrew told The Breakdown: “I don’t see Chermiti becoming a big player at Rangers. He scores in the big games. He scored six, seven goals against Celtic, Hearts, which is a good sign. He steps up for the big games.”

To which Thomson said: “There’s every chance, mate.”

Does Chermiti lead the line for Rangers vs Celtic?

Rohl has opted to start Chermiti along with another striker in recent games and that is something that has paid off.

He bagged a hat-trick against Hearts with Ryan Naderi playing alongside him, but doing that means that the Light Blues are short on a midfielder.

It remains to be seen how the Rangers manager views the tactical battle between the two sides and whether he would prefer winning the midfield battle over going gung-ho in attack.

An early goal would undoubtedly blow the roof off at Ibrox, and Rohl would want to get a good start on Sunday.

He can always revert to a three in midfield in the second half, but there is a very good chance that Chermiti and Naderi lead the line against Celtic.
