Swiss international striker Cedric Itten could be in line for a Champions League return to Rangers with new side BSC Young Boys.

The resurgent hitman was on target for Young Boys as Cedric Itten and his Swiss teammates progressed to the Champions League group stages at the expense of Maccabi Haifa.

Cedric Itten hit the first goal for the Swiss Super League champions before an Abdoulaye Seck own goal and an early second half strike from Filip Ugrinic guaranteed a 3-0 victory.

Defeating their Israeli counterparts following a 0-0 draw at Maccabi Haifa, the result means Cedric Itten and Young Boys will progress to the Champions League group stages.

It makes a stunning upturn in form for the Swiss striker – who scored 19 goals as Young Boys won the Swiss Super League last season – after a difficult two years at Ibrox came to an end last summer when he returned to his homeland.

And a potential return to Rangers lies in wait if the Ibrox side can overcome the odds and defeat an arrogant PSV side in the Netherlands tonight.

Rangers will be Champion League Pot 3, Cedric Itten and Young Boys Pot 4

As per the latest coefficient rankings for the sides who’ve qualified for the tournament, Rangers are set to go into pot 3 should they make the Champions League groups.

BSC Young Boys and Cedric Itten will be in pot 4 – coincidentally alongside Old Firm rivals Celtic – with Rangers’ potential seeding helping them avoid some big names.

AC Milan, Lazio, RB Salzburg and Shakhtar Donestk head the names who’re set to be in pot 3 whilst pot 4 is not without its own danger ties.

Premier League Newcastle United and La Liga club Real Sociedad will be the teams everyone wants to avoid when the Champions League draw is made later this week.

But for Rangers the focus is very much on making the Group Stages with a tantalising Champions League playoff with PSV neatly poised after a 2-2 draw at Ibrox.

Should the club overcome the Dutch at this stage for the second year running, then Young Boys and Cedric Itten may well be lying in wait.
