Todd Cantwell, if Rangers are to have any success this season, is going to be a key player for new manager Philippe Clement.
The 25-year old made an immediate impression last season but now the former Norwich City midfielder has to take his game to the next level.
He may be inexperienced at European level but Todd Cantwell could be the pivotal player for Rangers against Sparta Prague, depending on where Philippe Clement plays him.
Todd Cantwell position dilemma for Rangers
On Saturday against Hibs, Cantwell replaced Scott Wright in body and position.
Starting on the right hand side of the Rangers attack, however, he and Sam Lammers seemed to have license to interchange as Clement has touched on before during one of his press conferences
With options limited in wide areas and centrally, Todd Cantwell is more likely to play as a number eight rather than higher up behind a central striker for Rangers.
John Lundstram is likely to be the sitting midfielder, Cantwell can resurrect his partnership with Nicolas Raskin that showed early promise last season.
Lammers will probably get the nod on the right but only because he can interchange with Abdallah Sima and showed against Hibs that he can be an effective presser and get into good positions in the box.
The Dutchman also seems to do his best work on the wings rather than in central locations with his back to goal.
Ideally, Clement would probably prefer to play Todd Cantwell higher up and the Rangers boss does have the option of playing Ryan Jack who was on the bench against Hibs.
Jack would give a more solid base in the engine room but Clement wants players who are brave in possession and sees Cantwell as being a “quality” option for the Light Blues.
Ryan Jack is many things, but he has never been known for penchant for defence splitting through balls.
There can be only one option for where to play him.
