Burnley manager, Sean Dyche, has given an encouraging update on the status of Matej Vydra amid reported interest from Rangers, as quoted by Lancs Live.

This morning, a Glasgow Times report claimed that the Czech Republic international would clinch a late move to Ibrox, with Steven Gerrard looking to bolster his attacking resources after Jermain Defoe sustained an injury against Ross County in midweek.

It was later reported by Burnley Express editor, Chris Boden, that Burnley could block the deal should they be unable to find a replacement before the deadline.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

“Not at the moment,” said Dyche earlier this afternoon, as quoted by Lancs Live, when asked if he’d need to recruit if Vydra or defender, Ben Gibson, were to leave the club.

He went on to seemingly assert that nothing concrete was on the table, but refused to rule out a departure for either player.

“We are pretty much in control of the situation so anything we feel would be appropriate we would look at. There is nothing at this stage to consider at any worth and it will be considered if anything comes our way.”

“We will wait and see [if either player leaves].”

Verdict

Dyche’s comments are certainly encouraging for Bears hoping to see Vydra sign before 11pm tonight.

While his assertion that no bids had arrived for Vydra stands somewhat at odds with reports claiming a deal was close to being agreed, at least the player is available and things appear to be in Rangers’ hands.

Given that the Clarets won’t necessarily be seeking out a replacement, it’s simply about whether or not terms can be agreed between the two clubs and with the player himself.

Vydra has mustered just 231 minutes of action across all competitions this season [Transfermarkt], so it would seem likely that the player is keen to secure more playing time.

Alfredo Morelos’ presence ensures that isn’t guaranteed at Ibrox, but with Jermain Defoe out injured, if the 27-year-old did make the move, he’d likely go straight into the Gers squad as backup no.9.
