The news that Scottish football will adhere to pre-Brexit transfer rules ahead of the January window has reportedly paved a pathway for Rangers to secure a South American signing.

The BBC confirmed that Scottish clubs will be able to sign players from the European Union in January “if they meet the criteria of a specially convened appeals panel”.

Prior to this there were fears that a points system adopted by the English FA could be introduced in Scotland, making it harder for uncapped players to move to the SPFL.

But a process similar to the one already in place for signing non-EU players will begin in January, with players allowed to join if they meet specific criteria.

Non-EU players are allowed work permits for playing in Scotland if they were deemed to be of the highest calibre or that they would make a significant contribution to the Scottish game.

But the Daily Record have suggested that the uncertainty surrounding the transfer framework had raised fears January deals could be scuppered.

As a result of the news, the Record claim Rangers will be free to move for Colombian striker and FC Honka star Juan Alegria when the January window opens in little over a week’s time.

Rangers are reportedly 90% of the way to signing the 18-year-old striker who follows a path from Finland which is similar to countryman Alfredo Morelos.
