A rare occasion where Rangers fans should be agreeing with the Celtic manager

Brendan Rodgers is correct on Rangers' Europa League involvement

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers’ comments on Rangers in the Europa League are absolutely spot on.

As much as it pains Gers supporters to agree with any Celtic related figure and vice-versa, this is something both sides should be agreeing on.

Rodgers was talking today ahead of the Europa League curtain-raisers on Thursday night. Both Rangers and Celtic will participate in the group stages of Europe’s secondary competition this season.

It’s the first time two Scottish sides have competed in group stage football in Europe since 2009, when Rangers were in the Champions League and Celtic in the Europa.

Rodgers touched on that today and, in the Daily Record, he spoke of the importance of both sides competing in Europe for Scotland.

“I said at the outset that it would be great if we could get as many Scottish teams in there. It’s great that Rangers have got in there and they will be happy with the experience and everything that comes with that.

“It’s important too for Scotland as a nation to have them in there with ourselves, and hopefully it proves that. That’s the aim. Hopefully over the next few years we get other teams that will join in that fight to try and climb up the rankings again.”

When the Scots invade Europe

Rodgers is exactly right in pretty much everything he’s said there. This competition will hopefully prove to be a magnificent experience not just for the Rangers players, but for the supporters to enjoy once more.

Steven Gerrard has to use this Europa League experience to his full potential. Being in Europe in his first season in management is extremely impressive. As Rodgers said, it’s great that the club are going to get the chance to experience it.

In the grand scheme, Rangers only want this to be a stop-gap however. In the bigger picture, Gerrard and his troops will want to be in the Champions League. At the moment, only winning the Scottish Premiership gives you a glimmer of hope when it comes to qualifying.

Celtic were knocked out in the third qualifying round this season despite having a favourable draw. It shows just how unpredictable and difficult it is with the structure currently in place.

In order for Scottish sides to get a better crack at the Champions League, they have to do well in the Europa League. Having Rangers and Celtic in once more is a big boost to Scottish football, and hopefully the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts, and Hibernian can compete in the coming years also.

A better performance in Europe for Scotland provides all of our clubs with better opportunities. In order for Gerrard to build something truly special, Rangers want to be taking advantage of that.

It certainly won’t heal Old Firm relations, but Rodgers isn’t wrong with anything he said this afternoon.
