The mother of the inspirational Bradley Lowery has said Jermain Defoe’s signing for Rangers was “meant to be.”
Gemma Lowery is the mother of little Bradley, who had a special relationship with Defoe. Bradley was only six-years-old when he passed away with rare cancer neuroblastoma.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Record, mum Gemma revealed that Bradley and the Lowery family follow Rangers as well as Sunderland. It comes from Bradley’s dad Carl and grandad Dave, who are big bluenoses.

“It’s as if it was meant to be,” explains Gemma.
“It’s yet another way Jermain is honouring Bradley’s memory.
“Bradley would be extremely happy and delighted to know his hero has signed for the Gers. They were his next favourite team after his beloved Sunderland.
“His dad and grandad are both big Rangers fans and Bradley loved them too – he had a Rangers fleecy blanket his grandad gave him which he would take everywhere with him.”
Rangers signing Defoe the man, as well as Defoe the player
Defoe’s relationship with Bradley Lowery was incredibly moving. The striker supported Bradley during his illness and the public display of friendship prior to his passing moved the entire country.
It’s a measure of the man Rangers are snapping up. Not only is he a top footballer, but he’s a top person too.

Defoe was awarded an OBE for his commitment and contribution to charity. The Jermain Defoe Foundation supports vulnerable, homeless and abused children in his family’s native St. Lucia, the Caribbean and the UK.
He dedicated the award to Bradley Lowery, before getting a tattoo to commemorate his pal.
If there wasn’t already enough motivation for Jermain to go and make a success of it at Rangers, there certainly is now.
Rangers confirmed the signing of Defoe yesterday, and it’s fair to say the fans are buzzing.
