Boyd gives Rangers boss search verdict after Souness claim

Philippe Clement has won the race to be Rangers manager with Ibrox legend Graeme Souness playing a key role in his appointment.

Doubts about James Bisgrove and John Bennett’s ability to find the best possible candidate have been put to bed with the news that they considered the opinions of football experts rather than just business men in the board.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Kris Boyd has backed this decision and that if Philippe Clement has impressed the Rangers executive and Graeme Souness, then it is an appointment fans should get behind.

Rangers help from Graeme Souness given Boyd backing

With no director of football in place, there were doubts about whether or not an outside agency or help would be sought by Bisgrove and Bennett.

The news that Philippe Clement had been under consideration for some time and that Rangers had prepared for life after Michael Beale shows that they were prepared, to a certain extent.

Boyd, when asked about the appointment of the Belgian and the involvement of Souness, said:

“I think the board were pretty open that Graeme was liaising with them and the meetings.

“He’s an experienced man, he knows exactly what it takes to be a success at Rangers.

“If he’s sat down and spoken to numerous candidates and decided Philippe Clement is the man, I don’t think you can argue with that because he knows what it takes to manage Rangers.

“I know football has changed, but he understands the pressures of managing this football club. It was really important Rangers got someone in for the start of the week.”

Souness might not have been the person to go to for initial ideas on who to go for next, however, having him involved in the interview process was a smart move.

Not only does it get fans on board with Phillipe Clement but the Rangers support will know that a man of Graeme Souness’ stature has looked the Belgian in the eye and given him his approval.

Boyd is right, Souness knows what it takes to be a success at Rangers, let’s hope he’s helped to pick a winner.
