Ex-Rangers star Borna Barisic was rescued from his Turkish hell by Spanish side Leganes this winter.

But the Croatian left-back has suffered a heartbreaking injury just seven minutes into his debut with the La Liga club over the weekend.

The former Rangers defender left Ibrox last summer, ending a six-year stint in Glasgow by moving to Turkish outfit Trabzonspor.

After only nine Super Lig appearances in Turkey, Borna Barisic was on the move again this winter but it’s been an excruciating start to life in Spain.

Borna Barisic injured on Leganes debut

Borna Barisic left the pitch in excruciating pain after twisting and hurting his left knee for Leganes in a debut match against Valencia.

As reported by Marca, the 32-year-old turned awkwardly in the seventh minute of the match and eventually had to be substituted in a bittersweet debut in Spain.

Barisic had been signed this winter after an injury to first-choice left-back Enric Franquesa, who was ruled out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury in November.

The latest injury to Borna Barisic has left Leganes in a drastic situation with the player signed to replace Franquesa now facing a lengthy injury lay-off.

Leganes went on to lose the match against Valencia 2-0 after first-half goals from Christhian Mosquera and Mouctar Diakhaby.

Leganes are currently 17th in the La Liga table and are very much in a fight for survival this season.

Leganes count cost of signing ex-Rangers left-back

Borna Barisic was one of several highly-experienced players who left Rangers in the summer transfer window.

The Croatian joined Gers teammate John Lundstram in leaving Ibrox to move to Turkish side Trabzonspor on the country’s Black Sea coast.

It didn’t work out in the Super Lig for Borna with the left-back earning an impressive loan move to Spain to play for Leganes for the rest of the season.

But that temporary switch now looks set to be cut short by injury as Leganes count the cost of major defensive deficiencies at left-back.

Borna Barisic made 236 appearances for Rangers, scoring 10 goals, laying on 54 assists and lifting all three domestic trophies during his time in Glasgow.

Injuries were also a feature of the defender’s time in Glasgow and now Leganes are counting the cost of bringing Barisic into the club this January.
