Rangers left back Borna Barisic has been called up to the Croatia squad for the team’s upcoming European qualifiers.

The World Cup finalists will be looking to carry on their form from the summer’s tournament and start off qualifying strongly. Croatia are ranked 4th in world football.

It’s great news Rangers will have a representative in their squad. Fans will also be hoping it gives Borna a much-needed boost.

The former NK Osijek captain has had much of his season disrupted by injury. When the highly rated wingback did play in the early part of the season, he showed real flashes of his ability.

Now he appears injury free and is trying to find his feet in Steven Gerrard’s side. He has taken a bit of flak recently from supporters and seems to be lacking in confidence.

But as the weeks and months pass Rangers could have a real talented footballer on their hands. It’s about giving Barisic some time to settle into the country, club and style of football in Scotland.

He clearly remains very highly rated in Croatia. Even if this call-up may come as a surprise to some because of Barisic’s form. The break away from Rangers and some game time there could do him the world of good.

Croatia will play their first two Group E games against Azerbaijan (h) and Hungary (a) on the 21st and 24th of March respectively.

The Croatian left back told Sportske Novosti that he has been advised to avoid playing on plastic pitches as he recovers from injury.
