Rangers manager Steven Gerrard appears to have ruled Bongani Zungu out of the club’s next three matches [Rangers Football Club Twitter].

The Gers brought in Zungu on a season-long loan on deadline day and have an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

Since the transfer was announced, there has been some uncertainty around when the South Africa international would be available for selection, but an update provided by the Rangers boss on Friday suggests he won’t be seen in Light Blue for some time yet.

“Bongani Zungu is currently in quarantine so we sadly won’t see him for another 10 days or so,” he said, as quoted by the Rangers Football Club Twitter.

“We have sorted him with gym equipment so he can train from home.”

If Gerrard’s timescale is accurate and Zungu is still another 10 days away from arriving in Glasgow, he will definitely miss the club’s next three matches.

Rangers face Celtic in the Premiership on Saturday and Standard Liège in the Europa League next Thursday, before returning to domestic action against Livingston on 25 October.

Gerrard’s comments suggest 28-year-old Zungu will join up with the Gers squad soon after that fixture against Livi but despite the presence of gym equipment at his current location, he won’t be ready for selection immediately.

The exciting midfielder missed the majority of pre-season and only featured in two Ligue 2 matches for Amiens before sealing his exit. Add in a fortnight away from the training pitch and it’s clear he will need time to get up to speed before he can seriously challenge for a spot in a matchday squad.

Therefore, it’s highly likely that Rangers fans will have to wait until November to see the club’s newest signing in action.
