As Rangers prepare to face-off against Willem II in their QR3 Europa League tie in Holland, a first-team player from last season is likely to be recalled to the starting XI.
Veteran Gers stopper Allan McGregor has been left on the bench so far this campaign after an early-season injury handed a chance to summer signing Jon McLaughlin.
Scotland international McLaughlin has done no wrong – playing a key role in a record-breaking clean sheet run to start the season – leaving McGregor resigned to second choice for now.
But where McGregor can be handed his chance to shine is on the European stage, a place where he has done so many times before for the Ibrox club.
McGregor, 38, was reinstated for the 5-0 win over Lincoln Red Imps and whilst he was only called on once, the veteran goalie did his duty to keep out a shot from close range.
There’s nothing to suggest that McGregor won’t be recalled from this match and given his previous records in European games, there’s nothing to suggest he doesn’t deserve it.
Whilst McLaughlin can continue to do the business as long as he delivers in Scotland, there’s only one goalkeeper who deserves to be between the sticks on the continent.
And if history is anything to go by, Allan McGregor will likely show the Rangers fans exactly why when they take to the pitch against Willem II.
