Behind Rangers title celebrations as Stewart drops legend claim

When Rangers won the Scottish Premiership league title in 2020/21, it seemed like the beginning of something for squad members like Greg Stewart, instead of being a pinnacle that we have struggled to reach since.

An unbeaten league campaign saw the Light Blues crowned as champions in March and it was the cue for celebrations for the players as much as it was for the fans.

Speaking to the Scots Abroad podcast, Greg Stewart has revealed just how much partying he and the rest of the Rangers squad took part in as number 55 was secured.

The forward may have been a bit part player in the title winning season, however, he still played a role in the invincible season.

When asked by John Walker, who was hosting the podcast, how good a Rangers squad it was, Greg Stewart explained how they reacted to becoming champions:

“We had some good, good nights, especially when it came to winning the league.

“We heard that all the fans were going to be outside the stadium.

“I knew if we won that game (St Mirren) it was party time, so I wasn’t going home anyway.

“So, we beat St Mirren that day and, I swear to God, I don’t think I went home for three days!

“We were out for the next three days and we played Slavia Prague on the Thursday, I swear to God I think the boys had just got in on the Wednesday morning.

“Greegsy’s pulled off an unbelievable save, he couldn’t see 24 hours ago and he pulled off a save like that!”

“How we got a draw like that I’ll never know because most of us were still steaming!”

The performance against Slavia Prague did look particularly leggy.

Fans were, in the main, forgiving seeing as Europe had never been the priority that season and reaching the last 16 was a good achievement.

It’s an accusation that has been thrown at that Rangers squad when Greg Stewart was there though.

Winning the league was the end of the journey, rather than the beginning.

Once the league was won, it should have been shelved and onto the next one, instead, the club and players seemed to rest on their laurels and assume that success would be maintained without the same application and effort.

With another new manager on the way in Philippe Clement, hopefully, the scenes that we saw that day at Ibrox will be back sooner, rather than later.
