BBC Scotland reports that an SPFL board meeting is set to take place at 10am this morning, where it’s expected that the 2019/20 Premiership season will be brought to an early conclusion.

Football in Scotland has been halted since mid-March amid the global health crisis and the Championship, League One and League Two campaigns were brought to an end in April following a controversial ballot.

The governing body have since held the power to call off the Premiership campaign but no decision has yet been made.

UEFA have asked all member associations to declare whether or not they will attempt to complete their top-flight competitions by 25 May [Scottish Sun], though, and with that deadline looming, a board meeting has been arranged.

Rangers made it clear from the beginning that they believed all attempts should be made to finish the current season for the sake of sporting integrity, yet it appears all clubs now agree that the resumption of fixtures is unrealistic and financially unviable.

Unlike in the Netherlands, where the Eredivisie was cancelled with no winners and losers, it’s expected that the SPFL will crown Celtic as Premiership champions and formally relegate bottom of the table Hearts.

It’s a decision that will not go down well with Rangers fans. Yet, at this point, despite months of squabbling between clubs and the SPFL, it looks inevitable.

Currently 13 points behind the Hoops with a game in hand, the Gers will finish second for the second consecutive season under Steven Gerrard.
