Rangers are searching for a new manager but Kevin Muscat is now being described as an ‘outsider’ for the Ibrox job.

It’s now a week since Michael Beale was given the boot by Rangers.

The Gers decided to axe Beale just over 24 hours after a terrible 3-1 home defeat to Aberdeen.

Steven Davis has taken charge as interim boss twice now, first losing to Aris Limassol before beating St Mirren this afternoon.

We are still no closer to learning who the long-term manager will be for Rangers but Kevin Muscat’s chances have been played down…

Kevin Muscat to Rangers rumours cooled

As soon as Beale was given his marching orders, Muscat was one of the top names linked with the job.

A former Rangers defender in his playing days, Muscat has impressed as a manager with Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan.

Muscat won a J1 League title last season and is chasing another one this season having replaced Ange Postecoglou in 2021.

Reports from The Daily Record last week suggested that Muscat was abandoning new contract talks in Japan as he was interested in the Rangers job.

Sportsound host Kenny MacIntyre has offered an update this weekend though, claiming that Muscat is an ‘outsider’ for the job right now.

MacIntyre noted that Rangers could change the stance on Muscat but he’s one of four managers to have been spoken to so far.

“What I have been told is Philippe Clement, Pascal Jansen, Kevin Muscat and Frank Lampard have all been spoken with, Lampard is no longer under consideration.”

“Muscat, I’m told, is viewed – at the moment – as an outsider, that could change. Clement is a free agent but has other suitors apparently, and Jansen is very much of interest,” said MacIntyre.

Muscat stance may have put Rangers off

Maybe Rangers just don’t feel that Muscat is the right man for the job at the moment.

There is though a train of thought which leads us to wonder whether his commitment to Yokohama F. Marinos is a factor.

Muscat has been quoted as saying that he wants to bring another title to Yokohama F. Marinos whilst praising fans for their support.

The J1 League season runs until December 3rd, meaning Muscat may not be available for another two months as he chases another title win.

Can Rangers really wait for two months and leave rookie Davis in charge?

That may be why Rangers are looking at other options who are prepared to come right now, rather than leaving the situation dragging on and on.
