Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has named a ruled-effort he scored for Rangers during his time with Inter Milan as the greatest goal of his career.
The legendary former West Germany striker scored a wonderful volley against the Gers in the San Siro but the goal was ruled out by the referee for a high boot
Inter would go on to win the first leg of the clash 3-0 – with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scoring the third goal after Antonio Sabato and Franco Caudio had Inter two up – but that moment has stuck with him throughout his career.
“The best times were those as a player because playing in front of 70-80 thousand people,” said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge [Tuttosport].
“It’s the best thing in the world, a fantastic feeling.
“The best goal? It was ruled out by a German referee in a match between Glasgow Rangers and Inter Milan in the UEFA Cup.
“I scored another goal in that match, but it was not as good as the first one.”
Rangers would crash out of the UEFA Cup to Inter Milan that season but not without a spirited fightback at Ibrox which saw the Gers narrowly miss out after a 3-1 Ibrox victory.
David Mitchell gave Rangers the lead before Alessandro Altobelli equalised with Iain Ferguson going on to get a double.

A famous goalscorer with Bayern Munich for 10 seasons, scoring over 200 goals and winning two European Cups, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge joined Inter in 1984.
Spending three seasons in Milan, the striker would go on to finish his career in Switzerland with Servette but of all his goals it’s telling that the one which didn’t count is the one that rankles most.
Also a legendary scorer for West Germany, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made 95 caps for the country, scoring 45 goals.
The forward was also a losing World Cup finalist in 1982 and 1986, scoring in the latter, whilst he made the tournament XI in West Germany’s triumphant 1980 Euro Championships campaign.
Rangers are back in Europa League action this evening and face a clash with French giants Lyon in France.
