Bayer Leverkusen have provided an official update to supporters via Twitter amid uncertainty regarding the imminent restart of the Bundesliga season.
On Tuesday, the Daily Mail reported that as part of the easing of lockdown measures, the German government were set to clear the top-flight to return behind closed doors on 15 May.
In good news for fans of German football and the game in general, Leverkusen confirmed on Wednesday evening that fixtures would soon recommence.
However, as yet, the exact date of the restart is unknown.
“The 2019/20 Bundesliga season has been given the green light to continue,” reads a tweet from the official Bayer Leverkusen account.
“The official restart date is still to be announced. The German Football League (DFL) will decide this at a general meeting with representatives of the 36 professional clubs tomorrow.”
Leverkusen were Rangers’ last opponents – in the first leg of the Europa League Last 16 in mid-March – before football was halted amid the global health crisis.
Now, it looks as though Peter Bosz’s side will be one of the first clubs in Europe to return to action.
Leverkusen are now in line to complete their remaining nine league fixtures but it’s as yet unclear whether or not the second leg of their tie against the Gers will go ahead.
