Barry Ferguson thinks Rangers could sign £4.2m ace this week

Rangers legend Barry Ferguson is expecting to see Cyriel Dessers announced at Ibrox when the transfer window officially opens.

It’s easy to forget, given that Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell and Jack Butland have already been confirmed by Rangers, that the transfer window does not actually open until Wednesday of this week.

If the Gers are to take full advantage of a Celtic side who suddenly find themselves in transition following the rapid departure of their talismanic head coach Ange Postecoglou, this summer feels like an opportunity Mick Beale and co cannot afford to waste as they look to cut the gap at the top of the table. And no one could accuse Rangers of resting on their laurels.

Sterling, Dowell and Butland – all joining for free – add quality and quantity to Beale’s squad.

And, in Cyriel Dessers, Rangers are also closing in on a striker who won an Eredivisie Golden Boot with Heracles, broke the 20-goal barrier at Feyenoord in 2021/22 and, last term, found the net against Napoli in Serie A.

Cyriel Dessers wants Rangers move

“Beale went out of his way to sit (Butland) down and let him know how badly he wanted him to come to Rangers,” Ferguson tells the Daily Record, wondering if the manager’s post-season trip to Italy was more than a simple holiday.

“That tells me that Beale has known for some time exactly what he needs this summer, and that he has put the work in personally to make sure it happens by going and looking in the eyes of the players he wanted to bring in.

“It’s probably no coincidence that the Rangers boss was also spotted in Italy before the end of last season. And that he’s now bidding more than four million euros for Cremonese striker Cyriel Dessers.”

According to The Herald, Dessers wants to join. The Belgian-born Nigeria international has little interest in staying at a Cremonese side relegated from Serie A; Rangers expected to seal a deal for an initial fee of £4.2 million.

“It looks very much like a deal for the Nigerian will be concluded the moment the window opens up. And, if it is, that’ll be another big tick in Beale’s box,” Ferguson adds.

“I fully expect another three or four targets will come in over the next couple of weeks.

Rangers, the Herald add, are closing in on another Italy-based striker who made his name in the Netherlands; Sam Lammers arriving from Atalanta.
