Barisic takes part in Rangers training despite Braga injury

Rangers defender Borna Barisic took some part in training on Friday despite being forced off the previous night against Braga with an injury concern.

In RangersTV footage posted on the Rangers FC Twitter, the Croatian international can be seen participating in light group mobility exercises.

He was clearly in considerable discomfort on Thursday night after being clattered by an opposition player and he headed straight down the tunnel after being replaced by Greg Stewart in the 73rd minute.

On Friday morning, Gary McAllister confirmed that Barisic had taken a blow to the kidney region and would definitely miss Sunday’s game against St Johnstone.

His participation in today’s session, though, however minor the role, suggests he won’t be sidelined for a significant period of time.

The full-back is a crucial part of Steven Gerrard’s side and was one of the standout performers for Rangers over the first half of the season.

As well showing up well defensively, he adds an extra dimension in attack and has scored twice and registered 14 assists to date in all competitions.

He’s been in the wars somewhat since the winter break, having also missed recent fixtures against Kilmarnock and Livingston with an unrelated knock.

Although Joe Aribo fared admirably as a makeshift left-back for the closing stages of the manic Europa League fixture, Andy Halliday is most likely to fill the berth for the weekend trip to McDiarmid Park.

Plenty of fans will be breathing a sigh of relief over this one, though, as it appears there’s a chance Barisic could still feature in the second leg of the Braga tie next Wednesday.
