“Rangers are back”.
That’s a phrase many Gers supporters have just been waiting to use for a long time. Some souls may already have muttered it perhaps a tad prematurely.
Steven Gerrard finally has the football club on the right track after what’s been four years of hell for Rangers fans. Slouching through the lower leagues and taking a year more than necessary to get out of it, times have been tough on Rangers.
Even after being promoted into the Premiership, it hasn’t been plain sailing for the Ibrox club. False dawns under Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha, and Graeme Murty have been severely disappointing periods for Ibrox legions.
Therefore, today we ask the question to all Rangers fans out there – when will you consider Rangers as truly being “back”?
There are many different sets of criteria that different Gers supporters will have. There may even have been some that claimed they were back after winning Division three all those years ago. Of course, that won’t be the case for many.
The popular answer is likely to be that Rangers will only be back when they win the league. Such has been the dominance of Celtic in Scottish football, nothing would announce Rangers’ return more than a title-win.
Or, are you one of the more ambitious supporters? After seeing Celtic win two domestic trebles, do you feel a necessity to do exactly that and feel Rangers won’t truly be back until a clean sweep has been won?
Gerrard achieved what some would feel is the holy grail this season in returning to Europe. Rangers are now operating at Europa League level, and are certainly impressing in doing so. Is that enough to announce Rangers’ return? Perhaps they haven’t yet done so until they’re competing in the Champions League?
There are so many different points of view on this.
On a personal opinion, I feel Rangers will be back if they run Celtic to the wire for the title this season. The Old Firm rivalry is built on competition and one side pushing the other.
At the moment, Rangers are holding their own extremely well under Gerrard, and are pushing on strongly. A win against Celtic still eludes the side, however, and that’s a monkey that needs rectifying.
If Rangers can keep Celtic on their toes and even jump ahead of them frequently this year, then I feel that will be enough to announce the return of Rangers and Scottish football’s most fiercest rivalry.
Your opinion is what matters however. Let us know in the comments below when you feel Rangers will be back once again, if they aren’t already!
