Are Rangers fans deluding themselves over Alfredo Morelos?

The transfer window hasn’t even opened yet, and Alfredo Morelos already has one foot out the door. At least according to plenty of fans and plenty of voices in the media.

And if the Colombian should move on this summer, all the talk will move on to how much Rangers get for him.

Stewart Robertson claims Rangers want £20m Moussa Dembele money for the striker. Derek Ferguson claims he’d bite the hand off of anyone offering £6m [Scottish Sun]. The fans are split. But are bluenoses deluding themselves over the striker’s value or not?

Admittedly, £20m is a massive stretch for a player who is incredibly rough around the edges. If Morelos’ 30 goals have exemplified all that is good about the combative forward, his five red cards prove the opposite.

Morelos is a firebrand of a striker who just can’t seem to resist biting when someone baits a hook. For anyone watching him, it surely knocks money off his transfer value.

But, and this is the important thing, strikers are the most valuable commodity in football. Morelos can, and will, score goals anywhere he goes. Even for the most ardent opposer to the player, there can be little doubt about that.

To use an old cliche, some players just come alive in the box.

Are we overvaluing him at £20m? Right now, most probably. But if he can prove his composure off the ball as much as he already has on it, there’s no doubt he represents value for that price for another side.

Steven Gerrard suggested he won’t sell the player for anything below Rangers asking price [STV]. You get the feeling it’ll take somewhere between £10-15m to pique our interest.

But if we don’t get it, the club is probably better hanging on to him. After all, are you going to replace 30 goals in today’s market with £6m?
