Are people overplaying Rangers winger Sheyi Ojo squad comments?

On-loan Rangers winger Sheyi Ojo has been coming under fire for comments he has made regarding Rangers’ ambitions to challenge Celtic for the title this season.

The Liverpool loanee has come under fire for saying he “stands by” earlier comments that Rangers had the best squad in Scotland [Evening Times].

But for me, the hysteria whipped up in the press, amongst our rivals and even from the likes of Barry Ferguson completely takes the whole thing out of context.

Ojo believes in this Rangers squad and that the club can have a “really successful season”.

The winger – who has recently declared for Nigeria [Daily Record] – would be getting pelters if he suggested the opposite.

In the comments, Ojo also said “we have to give Celtic respect” but said Rangers don’t worry about the teams around them and that they are focusing on what they’re doing.

All of this is pretty run of the mill stuff. We want Sheyi Ojo to be ambitious, we want him to have his eyes on silverware.

Where some may take umbrage with the comments is in the public nature of them – as was the case with Barry Ferguson – but you look at what Ojo actually said it’s been blown well out of proportion.

The tricky winger was just expressing his ambitions for the side this season when asked. He wasn’t browbeating or taunting Celtic.

Does he really deserve the criticism for saying he believes we have a squad capable of winning silverware this season?
