Antoine Semenyo still yet to score for new side since Rangers failed with £5m January move

Rangers tasted defeat in their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo back in January as Bournemouth wrapped up a £10.5m deal for the Ghana international.

Sports World Ghana claimed that Rangers were prepared to offer £5m to sign the 23-year-old as he entered the final six months of his contract at Bristol City.

Clearly, Bournemouth blew Rangers out of the water by bidding more than double what Michael Beale and Ross Wilson were prepared to pay.

Now – however – those at Ibrox will presumably feel less irritated about missing out on Semenyo.

What’s the story?

Well, the London-born forward is still without a goal for Bournemouth as we approach April.

Semenyo has also failed to register an assist in his six appearances for the Cherries, leaving Rangers with little reason to be envious about missing out on his services.

WhoScored shows that the Bournemouth No.24 only averages 7.5 passes per game in the Premier League since his move from Bristol City, while he has also registered just 0.3 shots per game.

Of course, Semenyo is still young, and he deserves time to settle into the Premier League.

However, Rangers will probably be pleased that they didn’t attempt to match Bournemouth’s £10.5m outlay, as that would have been a lot to pay for someone who may not live up to expectations.

Rangers were on the right track with Semenyo

Regardless of how the Ghana international is performing at Bournemouth, Wilson was on the right track by looking at forwards in the Championship who are out of contract this summer.

The likes of Chuba Akpom – who sees his contract expire at Middlesbrough in July – would be an outstanding signing, having scored 24 goals in 31 Championship appearances so far this season.

Sheffield United wonderkid Daniel Jebbison – who The Athletic claim is a target for Everton – also has just months left on his contract. Some at Bramall Lane even believe he could become better than Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Hopefully, Rangers can find themselves a new forward this summer, as Beale prepares to say goodbye to the likes of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos.
