Angus Gunn showed why Rangers are so keen to sign him at the weekend with Norwich City coach David Wagner hailing an ‘outstanding’ Championship performance, speaking to the Pink ‘Un.

There are two ways Rangers fans can look at Gunn’s Man of the Match performance during Norwich’s 0-0 draw with a resurgent Wigan Athletic.

On one hand, the 27-year-old shot-stopper showed why he could be a potentially inspired replacement for the veteran Allan McGregor and the unconvincing Jon McLaughlin. On the other, it’s safe to assume Wagner won’t be rushing to push Gunn out the door if he maintains his current form (Scottish Sun).

Angus Gunn ‘outstanding’ as Rangers eye Norwich City ace

“It was an outstanding performance from Gunny,” says the former Huddersfield Town boss. “Right at the moment where we needed it. Obviously, this helped us. And it will help him for sure as well. We knew he was a very good goalkeeper.

“In three games, we won one, we drew one, we lost one. We move on with him, and hopefully he can perform consistently on the level like he has done because we will need it.

“For a goalkeeper, it’s very important to keep clean sheets. And then, obviously, to keep a clean sheet without making any errors.”

Gunn started the season as Norwich’s number two. But, after displacing Tim Krul, he has now started 13 of the last 16 Championship games.

The Canaries paid an initial £5 million to sign the one-time Manchester City from Southampton in the summer of 2021; Gunn falling out of favour at St Mary’s following that infamous 9-0 defeat to Leicester City. He still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his Carrow Road contract.

Rangers manager Mick Beale, meanwhile, is making no secret of his desire to bring at least one new shot-stopper to Ibrox during the off-season.

“I have goalkeepers in mind for the summer that I’d like to add,” Beale says, via The Scotsman.

“But I want to give Jon (McLaughlin) access to playing because he’s been here a long time. And, in the season we won the league, he played a lot of games and did well. I wanted to see what was there and I want to give Robby (McCrorie) the same opportunity as well.

“Allan understands that because of his age. He knows I have to see what’s here. I don’t want to be looking for three goalkeepers in the summer.”

Gunn, interestingly, worked alongside Ross Wilson – Rangers’ director of football – during his time at Southampton.
