Hearts midfielder Andy Halliday got his season off to a fine start as the ex-Rangers star slotted home a fine strike from distance in the Premier Sports Cup.

Halliday, 29, netted the opener in Hearts’ 3-0 win over Cove Rangers, his first start of the season and second appearance after coming off the bench in the 2-0 win over Peterhead.

Andy is in his second year at Tynecastle and enjoyed a successful campaign last season, helping the Jambos to promotion from the Championship following his release from Rangers.

Boyhood bluenose Halliday remains a popular figure amongst Gers fans and supporters will look forward to seeing the versatile midfielder back at Ibrox this season.

With Hearts back in the Scottish Premiership, Halliday is likely to return to the ground where he spent five years of his career.

Halliday joined Rangers in 2015 as part of the Mark Warburton revolution and survived many incarnations of the Gers side to play in five seasons with the club.

Andy was even infamously sent to Azerbaijan by Pedro Caixinha in 2017 as he enjoyed a brief loan spell with Azerbaijani outfit Gabala.

Infamously subbed off before half-time in a 4-0 Scottish Cup drubbing to Celtic in April 2018, this was undoubtedly the low point of the player’s Ibrox career.

After Steven Gerrard took the reins at Ibrox, Halliday was an important squad player and Gerrard routinely defended Halliday in the press.

The deputy left-back at Ibrox would also have his revenge on Celtic, putting in a Man of the Match performance in the 1-0 win over the Parkhead club in December 2018 at Ibrox.

Rangers’ first match with Hearts this season is on the 16th of October with Halliday surely eyeing a spot in the squad for the match.

Another ex-Rangers star is preparing to return to the club this season but instead of playing on the turf this former Ger claims it’ll be “special” taking his team to Ibrox.
