Andy Halliday explains using Alfredo Morelos’ old Rangers celebration in front of Hibs fans

Rangers fans were loving it when they clocked Andy Halliday pulling out the old Alfredo Morelos celebration in front of Hibs fans.

The former Gers midfielder popped up to score the winner for Motherwell at Easter Road on Saturday, getting on the end of Kofi Balmer’s long throw to volley home at the back post and take all three points back to Lanarkshire.

And he let the home support know all about it, running towards the ones nearest the goal before sliding along on his knees before defiantly pointing towards the ground in the style of a certain Colombian striker named Morelos.

Light Blues supporters picked up on the nod to El Bufalo and were praising Halliday on social media after the game.

Rangers diehard Halliday explains Hibs goal celebration

The 32-year-old has now moved to explain his motivations for celebrating in such a manner.

He insists he always gets stick from the Hibees support as a former Rangers and Hearts player, and was simply giving a bit back.

He said on Open Goal: “That was purely because it was against Hibs. I wouldn’t do it against anybody else. Because I did the celebration in the derby and they hated it, and I was getting next level abused.

“The abuse I was taking at corners – mental. I fully admit – that was pre-planned. If I’m scoring, I’m going for it.”

Halliday explains Hibs beef is ‘all in good jest’

The midfielder has taken stick from the Leith masses ever since his Rangers days and that continued when he signed for their capital rivals Hearts.

He was keen to give a bit back but insists, from his point of view anyway, it is all harmless fun.

He went on: “It’s all in good jest. I know any time I play against Hibs or a couple of other teams I am going to take a bit of stick. If you are a professional football player you need to expect that at times. You always look to get these wee nuggets when you can to give a bit back.

“It’s all in good jest and hopefully it is taken that way. It is good to get the bragging rights for Motherwell at the end of the day.”
