'Amazing' - Praise heaped on Rangers for new Bengaluru FC initiative, fans respond in style

Rangers have received praise on social media after the club confirmed a charitable merchandise initiative with Bengaluru FC.

Rangers announced a formal partnership with the Indian Super League club in September 2019 and they are one of three clubs with whom the Gers now have wide-ranging relationships, the others being Orange County SC in the United States and Germany’s Hamburger SV.

The partnership facilitated famous female Indian player Bala Devi’s transfer to the Rangers women’s team and the Light Blues broadcasted ISL matches before the season was halted due to the pandemic.

Covid has hit India hard, with the country now having one of the highest death tolls in the world.

Many national governments have been involved in relief work in recent months and now the Gers are trying to do their bit.

On Sunday morning, they announced that 100% of the proceeds from Rangers and Bengaluru FC co-branded scarves will go to organisations that are supporting the response to Covid-19.

‘Proceeds will be split between Let’s Be the Change and The Pawsome People Project,’ reads the release on Rangers.co.uk. ‘Let’s Be The Change are providing medical assistance – big and small – to people who are struggling to afford it whereas The Pawsome People Project are feeding vulnerable animals who have been neglected through the pandemic.’

‘In addition, Rangers will provide children’s charities in Bangalore with a donation of Rangers branded blankets, stationery kits and small toys.’

It’s an excellent move from Rangers to forgo revenue for an extremely important cause and supporters responded brilliantly, with the scarves selling out on the club’s online store by Sunday afternoon.

Here’s a selection of reactions to the initiative from health professionals, individuals connected to Bengaluru FC and Indian football in general, and Rangers fans:
