As quickly as possible, Rangers boss Philippe Clement must do one thing in January.
And according to Ally McCoist, that is to tie down No1 goalkeeper Jack Butland on an even longer contract than the one he is on now.
Butland has been easily Rangers’ best signing of the season and has also been the club’s most consistent performer since joining on a free transfer.
Given the seal of approval by Allan McGregor recently, the ex-Manchester United stopper is so dependable. It must be a joy as a defender knowing the last line of defence is the assured presence of Butland.
Despite conceding two goals he could do nothing about, Butland made a number of impressive saves to help Rangers get over the line against Real Betis and into the Europa League last 16 on Thursday.

And speaking to TNT Sports after that historic victory in Seville, McCoist issued Clement and director of football Nils Koppen a plea to extend Butland’s Rangers contract which is currently set to run out in May 2027.
Super Ally said: “Another thing worth mentioning is will Clement be supported in the transfer window? Absolutely, yes, but for the moment the first thing I’m doing is getting the goalkeeper on a longer contract.
“That’s the first thing I would do. I would extend that, the goalkeeper has been absolutely outstanding. He will bring one or two new faces into the club and deserves to do that but you want to keep that goalkeeper.”
