Ally McCoist and Kris Boyd certainly have plenty in common, but the former has heaped huge praise on the latter.
Rangers goal-scoring legend McCoist said a few words after Boyd’s testimonial match at the weekend. A Kilmarnock XI beat a Rangers Legends side 6-3 in Ayrshire yesterday. Boyd, in typically symbolic fashion, rattled home a clinical hat-trick.
Yet it was the words of McCoist post-match that were the most heart-warming for supporters. The former Rangers manager netted a sensational 355 goals in all competitions at Ibrox.
But it was Boyd’s big day at Rugby Park yesterday, and McCoist revealed that he was the best finisher of his generation.
“Kris, in my opinion, is definitely the best finisher of his generation. He’s a great goalscorer, and it is magic for us to have the opportunity to come down here and pay tribute to him, support him and thank him, though I still think he has a few goals left in him!
“It’s great too to come down and see the likes of Sasa Papac and Pedro Mendes – it’s brilliant and it says a lot for Boydy too that these boys have come back.”

Nobody can deny that Boyd was one of the greatest finishers of his time. After all, he’s the top goalscorer in Scottish Premiership history with over 200 goals at Rangers and Kilmarnock
Boyd is a shadow of the player these days that he once was. The Gers forward used to be supremely clinical in front of goal, and managed to work alongside a bunch of different forwards during his time at Ibrox.
He’s never been known for his mobility, and that’s something he takes great delight in. Walter Smith in particular knew this, and had him as the focal point going forward because he knew how deadly Boyd was.
Nobody has scored more goals at Rangers than Boyd ever since McCoist. He divided the support to an extent because of his lack of a contribution in other areas of the pitch. In truth, however, Boyd just never needed to do so.
Even in his twilight years, Boyd is still enjoying a fruitful goal-scoring period. So far at Kilmarnock, the forward has netted just under 50 goals for the Ayrshire side since joining back in 2015.
It’s high praise coming from one of the best goal-scorers of all time. Boyd will be honoured at the praise, but nothing McCoist has said was a lie.
