A stalwart defender who could play as a full-back on either side or as a centre back, Dawsonw led the club at a young age and through some of the Gers’ most baron years.

Despite this, Ally still managed to help guide the club to six domestic cup trophies. Two of those – a League Cup and Scottish Cup – Dawson lifted as captain.

Joining Rangers at 16, Ally Dawson made his debut in September 1975 against Queens’ Park and played across 12 seasons spanning three managers, working under Jock Wallace, John Greig and Graeme Souness.

Departing for Blackburn Rovers in 1987, Dawson was inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame in 2011 and worked extensively with the club’s Academy and the Rangers Soccer Academies.

A popular man amongst the Rangers support and even more so amongst those who knew him personally, Dawson was immensely proud to be a Ranger and his passing will be felt at the club.

Ally also managed five caps for the Scotland national team and earned promotion from the old Scottish Third Division as Hamilton manager in 2001.

Rangers paid tribute to their former captain after the news of his passing, at age 63.

The club aren’t the only ones who’ve been saluting Dawson as fans, former players and voices in the media paid tribute to one of the club’s most loyal servants:
