Rangers legend Allan McGregor has broken his silence on the Europa League Final penalty shoot-out defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

And in typical style the iconic former Rangers number one has dismissed the clash because the Ibrox side never picked up the trophy in Seville.

Speaking as part of a special UEFA segment on the role of the Rangers goalkeeper, Allan McGregor has also been giving his two cents on current number one Jack Butland.

Allan McGregor talks Europa League heartbreak

After suffering injury heartbreak on the Road to Manchester in 2008, the stage was set for Allan McGregor to avenge that pain in Seville.

With Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt tied at 1-1 the 2022 Europa League Final was forced to penalty kicks and all eyes were on Allan McGregor.

But with ruthless Eintracht Frankfurt sinking all five of their spot kicks, Allan McGregor not standing a chance with any of them, Aaron Ramsey’s miss consigned Rangers’ fate.

Claiming he’s yet to watch the shootout back – and he’s not alone there – the Rangers goalkeeper has just revisited the match.

“I was probably thinking too much actually,” said McGregor. “Trying to look at the other regular penalty takers and trying to get an eye for where they’re going to go.

“I hate going on about Finals at this club because they don’t matter. Winning things matter.

“I don’t want to think that’s good enough for this club because it isn’t. I think about it but I’ve not looked back to it.”

Greegsy on Jack Butland

Allan McGregor has also been speaking about current Rangers number one Jack Butland in the interview with UEFA.

Claiming the pair have faced off playing golf since Jack Butland joined, Allan McGregor has praised the stopper in a genuinely massive stamp of Ibrox approval.

If the legendary Rangers stopper is in your corner, you know there’s something about you and fans will be very happy to hear that Butland has got a big thumbs up.

“I didn’t know his personality beforehand,” said McGregor. “But after meeting him I think he’s very calm, composed, I’ve beaten him at golf a few times since then as well. We get on well.

”I imagine anybody coming to this club would relish winning stuff and I think he’s got that in him as well and he’s a great goalkeeper as well, so that’s always a great bonus.”

Ex-Rangers number one talks Ibrox “hunger”

Speaking about his time at Rangers, Allan McGregor has also been claiming that from the moment he walked through the doors at Ibrox, he wanted to be number one.

In stirring comments, the legendary ex-Rangers stopper has claimed that the pressure you find at Ibrox is key for any player with ambitions in the game.

“People want to be at a club that’s got that pressure if you want to play football,” said McGregor.

“From the first moment you walk through the front doors and the marble staircase you’re in awe of it.

“It was just a hunger that I had just to play there one day and be number one.”

Hall of Famer Allan McGregor made 505 appearances for Rangers across two spells with the club, winning four Scottish titles, four Scottish Cups and five League Cups.

Ahead of the Europa League clash with Real Betis, one Rangers staffer is also claiming Jack Butland could soon usurp Allan McGregor in Glasgow.
