English football legend Gary Lineker had Alan Shearer and Micah Richards in stitches when he asked who they were backing out of Rangers and Celtic this season.

The trio were discussing Rangers’ 3-0 weekend win over St Johnstone which has sent them to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

As Micah Richards waxed lyrical about Todd Cantwell and James Tavernier, Gary Lineker posed both Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer and ex-Man City star Richards the ultimate Rangers and Celtic question.

But neither would take the bait as they refused to answer – with Lineker himself sitting firmly on the fence!

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Micah Richards on Rangers & Celtic

The trio were speaking as part of their weekly the Rest is Football podcast where they discuss football affairs current and historic.

After Micah Richards and Alan Shearer both confirmed they’d watched the match between Rangers and St Johnstone, here’s how the discussion went:

Gary Lineker: “Who do you want to win Rangers or Celtic?”

Michael Richards: “Ohhh no, no, no. I don’t want to get abused on social media.”

Alan Shearer: “He’s setting us up there. He’s setting us right up there isn’t he Micah? Who do you want to win Gaz?”

GL: “Who do I want to win? I want the best team to win. May the best team win.”

Scottish Premiership title tussle splits opinion

Everybody knows just how tense the Rangers and Celtic rivalry is and it’s clear none of these former England stars want to throw their hat into the ring.

With Rangers top of the league, and Celtic going through a sticky patch, plenty are pointing to the Ibrox side as favourites.

But it’s clear this will be a tight-run thing in the Premiership this season, even if Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards don’t want to call it.

Rangers leapfrogged their Old Firm rivals to the summit of the Scottish Premiership with a win over St Johnstone at the weekend after Celtic had stumbled against Kilmarnock.
