Rangers remained interested in signing former Scandinavian Celtic trialist Finnur Tomas Palmason even after an injury cut short a spell at Ibrox earlier in the year.
The KR Reykjavik defender, 19, is being tipped as Iceland’s next big thing and spent a spell on trial at Parkhead in November 2017 before turning down a return to Celtic Park in January 2018.
The defender was needed for KR Reykjavik’s league campaign back then but Palmason was back in Glasgow earlier this year for a trial with Rangers.
However, that too was cut short by a broken bone in his foot, but it didn’t stop the Gers persisting with interest in the player, at least according to the player’s advisor.
Olaf Thordarson has suggested that the youngster would’ve made a move to a top European club already if it hadn’t been for his luck with injuries.
“They [Rangers] kept calling him,” says Thordarson [The Times].
“They were very professional but also very human. But for the injury, he would have already signed for a European club.”
The defender played in Celtic’s 6-0 drubbing of lowly KR Reykjavik in their recent Champions League qualifier but that hasn’t stopped the hype train surrounding the player.
When asked to compare the player to another footballer, former Celtic striker Kjartan Finnbogason suggested Palmason has shades of £75m Liverpool man Virgil van Dijk.
“Maybe [Virgil] Van Dijk,” said Kjartansson.
“He’s very calm on the ball and fast over the first couple of metres. He needs some experience under his belt so I hope for him that he will be able to play in this game.”
