Rangers defender Leon Balogun has suggested that he’s on the verge of a contract extension at Ibrox as he spoke following the 4-3 win over Royal Antwerp.

The big Nigerian international defender, 32, deputised effectively for captain James Tavernier as the influential wing-back was subbed off in the first half of the highly entertaining match.

Rangers are awaiting the outcome of a scan regarding Tavernier, but Steven Gerrard did confirm the player is set to miss the next few matches due to the injury.

Balogun was also given a vote of confidence by Steven Gerrard should the ex-Brighton man be called upon in Tav’s absence with Leon also suggesting he is about to trigger a contract extension.

Steven Gerrard has previously alluded to some sort of clause in the player’s contract with Balogun now claiming this is set to be activated imminently.

“I am playing for an amazing club,” said Balogun [Rangers].

“This season so far has been going really well for me. So, yeah, I just hope it keeps going, I hope I can keep the momentum going and we can then at one point announce that we pulled the trigger.

“Obviously it is under some confidentiality. But it is getting closer and closer. Let’s just say I am quite confident that my time with Rangers is not over after this season.”

It all points to an extension clause in the defender’s contract and so far Balogun has made 22 appearances this season for Rangers – is 25 or 30 the milestone?

Rangers fans expressed their disappointment in right full-back Nathan Patterson as he blows his chance to announce himself at Ibrox amid Tav’s injury following a Covid-19 breach.
