Dick Advocaat has made a comparison between the Rangers fans and their Feyenoord counterparts ahead of this evening’s Europa League clash in Rotterdam, as seen on the Feyenoord YouTube.
As a former Ibrox boss, the 72-year-old knows all about the raucous atmosphere that can be created in Govan. His players do too, having lost 1-0 there in September under the previous manager, Jaap Stam.
Yet, he’s claimed that the Dutch ‘fanatics’ are a match for the Bears.
“In that game [the Ibrox fixture], it was only one team was there and I didn’t see Feyenoord”, Advocaat told a press conference, as seen on Feyenoord YouTube. “So tomorrow night we have to do [it a] different way. We have to show what we want.”
“And we have a very fanatic crowd here. Pretty much the same as at Ibrox. We need the supporters because we need that to get a surprise.”
Verdict
It’s a big claim from Advocaat to put the fans of his current club on a par with the Rangers faithful.
Especially considering what we saw from their travelling support at Ibrox.
At half-time, they tried to provoke fighting, but that was the most vocal they were for the majority of the game. As soon as Sheyi Ojo scored the opener, it was like a library in their section.
Feyenoord’s hopes of progression hinge on victory tonight, though, so it’s understandable that Advocaat would try to rev up the atmosphere.
With the Gers the much better side first time around, he needs to make use of all the resources at his disposal.
