Rangers legend Ally McCoist has always backed Ange Postecoglou as the Tottenham Hotspur manager lifts the Europa League trophy.

Postecoglou, 59, has found himself under immense pressure at Spurs this season, with the North London club a devastating 17th in the English top flight.

But amid injuries and criticism, former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has defied his critics by delivering on his promise of a trophy at Spurs this season.

And after lifting the Europa League, it was Rangers legend Ally McCoist who was among the first to congratulate the former Parkhead boss.

Ally McCoist clipped in warm Ange Postecoglou embrace

Ally McCoist was clipped giving Ange Postecoglou a warm embrace on the pitch at the Estadio de San Mames, which hosted this year’s Europa League Final.

Rangers were defeated by would-be hosts Athletic Bilbao in the tournament’s quarter-finals, with Manchester United defeating the Spaniards to reach the showpiece.

Spurs had overcome Bodo/Glimt and in a steely defensive display, limited United’s opportunities after Brennan Johnson had forced the ball over the line.

It was certainly not a memorable match, but come full-time Ally McCoist was clipped in a warm embrace with Ange Postecoglou which highlights the respect the pair have for one another.

Rangers legend ‘absolutely delighted’ for ex-Celtic manager

Rangers faced Tottenham Hotspur in the League Phase of this season’s Europa League, holding the Premier League giants to a 1-1 draw.

Hamza Igamane fired the Gers into the lead before Dejan Kulusevski scored an equaliser, with Cyriel Dessers being thwarted by Fraser Forster later in the game.

Speaking at full-time on TNT Sport’s live coverage of the match, Ally McCoist paid tribute to Postecoglou who had told a reporter he ‘always wins something in his second season’ earlier in the campaign.

”Ange delivers what he says he does – that’ll be the story tomorrow,” McCoist explained. “And rightly so… I’ll put my cards on the table, I’m absolutely delighted for him.

“Some of the criticism has been way over the top – particularly in the buildup to this final. I don’t think anyone can grudge him this trophy.”
