Alan Burrows, the Aberdeen CEO must have had a few sleepless nights recently after his decision to sell league cup final tickets ended up with Rangers fans hijacking the general sale – allegedly.

The former Motherwell executive has often been praised for his transparency at both clubs as well as his desire to keep fans informed and at the heart of decision making, on this occasion, he has got it spectacularly wrong.

Writing on X, Guardian journalist and well-known wind up merchant Ewan Murray couldn’t resist having a laugh at Aberdeen’s expense after an investigation into Rangers fans scheming was concluded.

Aberdeen ticket farce sees Rangers fans cause havoc

You have to wonder what he was thinking.

Aberdeen’s haste to prove that they should have been given a 50/50 split against Rangers has backfired.

They didn’t demand the same quota in the last final when they played Celtic so why are they so up in arms now?

Aberdeen have around 10,000 season ticket holders who should all have been guaranteed one off the 19,500 tickets allocated by the SPFL, and yet, Alan Burrows rushing to put them out on general sale and allow four per customer has seen many missing out.

In response to the ticket office still being closed, Murray mused as to what the investigation might involve:

“Poor Aberdeen ticket office staff having to conduct checks today.

“Hello… what team do you support?”

“Aberdeen…”

“Name the starting XI from our Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in 1984…”

“Leighton… Rougvie….”

“GOTCHA!! Ticket suspended….”

Even a quick look on social media tells you that Aberdeen have had a nightmare sorting this one out.

There will be Aberdeen fans from Glasgow so, has the club just banned anyone with a west coast address from getting a ticket because they might be Rangers fans?

There will also be fans of the Ibrox outfit who have registered on Aberdeen’s ticket site so that they can attend away games in disguise.

The length that fans will go to should never be underestimated.

Murray is right, other than checking and prioritising fans that have previously bought tickets, how can they tell who is and who isn’t an Aberdeen fan?

Regardless, despite Burrows intervention, you can guarantee there will be Rangers fans mixed in with the Aberdeen ones.
