Aberdeen defender Shay Logan looks to have taken a swipe at Rangers finances, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
The Gers recently published their Annual Report, detailing a 63% increase in turnover, but a loss for the year of £11.3 million.
A major contributing factor to those figures was player transfers, but spending has continued in recent times, with Ryan Kent becoming the club’s second most expensive ever signing at the start of September.
In light of recent developments, Logan has accused the Gers of double standards and hinted the Dons are being run more sustainably.
“Rangers and Celtic have the means and the funds,” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “I just think it’s funny they can go and play the likes of Porto or Valencia in the Europa League and use it as, ‘Oh but’. It works both ways.”
“Their funds are their funds and they have good money behind them, but we have no debt.
“We’re a very well run club. If they can spend £7million on a winger, let them do it.”
He went on to state that given the financial gap, it’s unrealistic for the Dons to target anything other than a third-place finish.
Verdict
Logan’s comments here smack of bitterness. The 31-year-old has been in Scotland since 2014, turning out close to 200 times in the league for what has been at times considered a good Dons team, but he only has one League Cup winners medal to show for it.
Rangers’ transfer decisions should be of little concern to him, but clearly he felt the need to mention the impressive Kent’s signing in light of the recent financial revelations.
Yet, he’s an outsider looking in and isn’t qualified to comment.
If the club was in any real financial trouble, there’s no way they would have given into Liverpool’s demands and stumped up the reported £7.5m for Kent [Sky Sports]. Likewise, if new Director of Football Ross Wilson had any concerns whatsoever, there’s simply no way he’d have risked leaving the Premier League to come to Ibrox.
