£9m warning fired to Rangers star as £16m+ move reportedly hits skids

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has fired a warning to Alfredo Morelos as the club reportedly reject a £16m+ bid from Lille for the striker.

According to the Daily Mail, the Gers rejected the megabucks move with Steven Gerrard’s side holding out for closer to £20m for the player with Lille said to be “growing frustrated”.

Gerrard has been adamant that Morelos will not leave for below his market valuation and was straight to the point concerning the work the Colombian must do to retain his starting berth.

Rangers boss Gerrard admitted following the 1-0 Europa League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen that Morelos has “had his head turned” by the Ligue 1 club’s interest.

But the Ibrox gaffer has warned Morelos he will need to fight for his place in the Rangers XI with competition for places heating up.

“Whether Alfredo stays or goes, he has a fight to keep the shirt as we want competition for every position,” said Gerrard [Glasgow Times].

“That brings the best out in everyone. We don’t want any player to automatically think it’s their shirt every week.

“The plan is to have two good players in every position and have everyone fighting for game time, 100 per cent.

“Everyone has no choice [but to get their head around that]. That competition is coming. That’s what I want to do in every position.”

Gerrard’s warning also comes after the Gers splashed out anywhere up to £9m [Clyde SSB 04/08/20] to bring strike duo Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten to the club this week.

The talented forward pair come to Ibrox from Anderlecht and FC St. Gallen respectively and will provide much-needed competition for the striking berth at Rangers.
