£49m Man City superstar overtakes Rangers boss on all-time scorer list

England international and £49m Man City winger Raheem Sterling has officially overtaken Rangers boss and ex-Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard in a list of the nation’s all-time Champions League goalscorers.

Sterling, 26, is a former Liverpool teammate of Steven Gerrard’s and moved to Manchester for the eyewatering fee way back in 2015.

The goal means Sterling has now scored 22 goals for in the Champions League, leapfrogging Gerrard to 4th place with the legendary Anfield captain scoring 21 times in the competition.

However there was some confusion over whether or not Sterling’s goal – scored in the closing stages of Man City’s 3-0 win over Marseille – would go down as the pacey winger’s strike.

Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez was originally credited with an own goal but replays show that Sterling did hammer the ball high into the net.

Gerrard now slips into fifth place on the all-time English Champions League goalscorer list with Frank Lampard in 3rd (23), Paul Scholes in 4th (24) and Wayne Rooney top of the pile (30).

Rangers boss Gerrard carved out a monumental career as a professional footballer and showed incredible loyalty to Liverpool over his 17-year playing career with the Reds.

In total Gerrard played 73 games for Liverpool in the Champions League, scoring 21 goals, laying on 15 assists and winning the competition in 2005 [Transfermarkt].

The Ibrox gaffer famously inspired his teammates to turn around a 3-0 halftime deficit in the final against AC Milan in a game which is known as the Miracle of Istanbul.

Meanwhile, Rangers fans have been giving their thoughts on the prospect of facing the other side of Manchester in the Europa League this season.
