£2.5m transfer call saw Rangers miss guaranteed goals

Rangers summer transfer business has come under scrutiny since day one of the season with letting Antonio Colak leave to buy Cyriel Dessers looking stranger by the day.

The Croatia international moved to Palma for a fee believed to be around the £2.5m that Giovanni van Bronckhorst reportedly paid to bring him to Glasgow in the first place.

With Kemar Roofe struggling for fitness and Dessers for form, Rangers decision to sell Antonio Colak, who scored 18 goals despite hardly playing in the second half of the season, looks like a poor one by Michael Beale.

Rangers decision to sell Antonio Colak looks a poor one

Colak had his weaknesses and some of the criticism was aimed at him because he wasn’t Alfredo Morelos.

The difference was that Colak needed service to score goals which meant that when it dried up, his performances could be anonymous.

Put the 30-year old in front of some of the chances that have fallen to Dessers and it’s a pretty safe bet that he would be on more than the four goals that the current Rangers number nine has.

One of the issues under Michael Beale was that he seemed intent on having all of his forwards capable of creating chances and building play.

As Celtic have shown with Kyogo Furuhashi, this isn’t necessary against most SPFL sides.

Having someone to open the scoring with the first chance that comes to them or scoring the second or third to make things more comfortable can be the difference.

To make matters worse, Rangers sold Antonio Colak for £2.5m and paid Cyriel Dessers for £4m, that’s a lot of goals lost and at least £1.5m down the drain that won’t be recouped due to the Nigeria international’s age.

Philippe Clement has acquired a squad that is short of confidence and with a few holes in it, he might have preferred to still have as clinical a striker as Antonio Colak but Cyriel Dessers will have to do for now.
