Aberdeen legend Willie Miller has conceded that Rangers “were the better team” and deserved their Scottish Premiership victory at Ibrox.

The Pittodrie icon was speaking after Rangers defeated Aberdeen 2-1 at Ibrox, goals from Rabbi Matondo and Todd Cantwell overcoming a Bojan Miovski strike.

It was an impressive and well-earned victory from Rangers in a competitive match with Aberdeen, and to his credit Willie Miller has conceded the Gers deserved their victory.

Willie Miller: Rangers deserved Aberdeen victory

The legendary former Aberdeen defender was speaking as part of BBC Scotland’s coverage of the match and was full of praise for the Ibrox side.

But whilst Willie Miller had plenty of positives to say about Rangers, the Aberdeen hero was also full of plaudits for Neil Warnock’s side.

“They deserved it,” said Miller. “They were the better team.

“It was much more like a Rangers performance you’d expect with the crowd behind them. A high tempo, not concentrating on just keeping possession.

“You can talk about possession and possession only matters when you’re doing something with it.

“I’ve been here in the past and Rangers have had plenty of possession and they haven’t done anything with it.

“On this occasion, particularly in the first half but even in the second half, everything was about going forward, it was all about causing the opposition problems.

“Aberdeen played well. They played well defensively, they had to defend in depth at times, they had to be fully concentrated and they were.

“Rangers deserved the victory, no doubt about that, but there’s a lot of pleasing aspects to the Aberdeen performance as well.”

Adding later: “This is what Ibrox used to be like. It hasn’t been like this for a wee while. The atmosphere hasn’t been as electric as what it was tonight. I was quite surprised actually at how vociferous it was. I think they’re getting better, this team, I don’t think they’re right at the very top just yet.”

Rangers cut Scottish Premiership gap

Rangers have cut the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 0 points and one goal with Old Firm rivals Celtic after the win over Aberdeen.

It’s been a remarkable run for manager Philippe Clement, who has already lifted a League Cup, qualified for the Europa League knockouts, and hauled back a seven-point difference in the Scottish Premiership.

Aberdeen have proven a bogey side for Rangers as of late – the Gers have already dropped five points to their northeast rivals this season – but the result has flipped that record on its head.

Willie Miller and Aberdeen will look to improve under Neil Warnock but for Rangers the attentions swing to Scottish Cup duties and Ayr United this weekend.

In the Scottish Premiership however, all eyes are on Celtic as they visit Hibs in the Scottish Premiership this evening.
