Where Barry Ferguson has to intervene to solve Rangers problem Fenerbahce could exploit

Barry Ferguson is looking to drive standards back up at Rangers so that those who are around next season can know full well what is and isn’t acceptable.

The Hall of Fame legend isn’t working with players of the calibre of Ronald de Boer, but it will take more than passion and the right mentality to see an improvement between now and the end of the season.

One major issue, has been the lack of control, particularly in midfield, an area of the park that Ferguson should know exactly what Rangers need.

Barry Ferguson needs to make a change to Rangers’ midfield

Against Motherwell, Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande were overrun and the interim Gers manager will be looking to find a way to give them more help.

The strange thing is, at Rugby Park, Ferguson moved Ianis Hagi into a deeper role, and it worked.

Numbers are short in the squad in terms of reinforcements, however, he still has options.

Connor Barron, Bailey Rice, Nedim Bajrami and Hagi can all play as either a No.6 or No.8.

Doing nothing will see the same performances for the rest of the season and results could be even worse against the likes of Fenerbahce.

What has Ferguson said about the changes Rangers need to make?

Changing shape and personnel is one thing, but Ferguson has also spoken about the changes that the squad has to make in the top two inches:

“It’s clear they will suffer a heavy defeat,” Ferguson admitted when asked about what will happen if performance levels don’t improve.

“I’m not going to sit here and try and kid people on. That level of performance, certainly in the first half, is nowhere near the standards that are needed.”

“It’s my job now in this short period of time and I’m going to just go and work my backside off to make sure this gets sorted,” he added.

“I spoke to them in the dressing room, they understand it. Listen, Rangers fans can accept you not playing well. What Rangers fans can’t accept is when your team gets run over the top of in the first 45 minutes.”
