Rangers returned to league action with St Johnstone making the late trip to Glasgow and the even later trip back up to Perth.

Ibrox was, understandably, not at full capacity with it nearly impossible to travel around Scotland using public transport on a Sunday night and fans having work, or school, the next day.

One talking point before a ball was kicked was the inclusion of Vaclav Cerny after fluffing his lines for Rangers against Lyon and fans voicing their frustrations.

Vaclav Cerny thanks Philippe Clement for Rangers backing

The manager has shown that he is someone who will back his players to the hilt and he was rewarded as Cerny scored his second and third goals for Rangers.

The first was a moment of magic from the Czechia international and the 26-year old was clearly thankful to Philippe Clement for backing him.

After celebrating with teammates, Cerny made his way to the Gers boss to thank him for the support and for sticking by him.

It has been a difficult couple of weeks for Cerny.

His form, after a promising start, has dipped, culminating with the incredible miss against Lyon.

A fall-out with fans also didn’t help his cause with Clement explaining what he said to the flying winger:

“No, I just spoke with him about the game and the story we’re making better and better.

“He didn’t play too many games last season, so we need to raise his level in that way to be able to perform every two days and that’s a normal story.”

Cerny had good numbers in the Eredivisie before signing for Wolfsburg where he hasn’t quite been as prolific.

The three goals that he has scored in Rangers colours prove that he has ability, and, with belief, he can be trusted to do it more often.

Cerny has the quality needed to be a success for Rangers

When Cerny signed, Clement was delighted to sign a player with such a pedigree:

“He has already shown his attacking qualities during his time in the Eredivisie and at Wolfsburg and he will further strengthen our attacking options in the squad.

“I feel as a club and staff we can continue to help him as a player to reach new levels and I am excited to see what the season holds for him at Rangers.”

Playing for Rangers is never an easy job.

The jersey doesn’t shrink to fit and brought shoulders are needed to fill it.

As a loanee, it would have been easy for Cerny to take the easy option, instead, with his manager’s backing, he has rolled up his sleeves and got back to doing what he does best – tormenting defences and scoring goals.
