“Unlucky!” – Kris Boyd nails Christ Sutton in Rangers squad wind-up

One thing Philippe Clement isn’t scared to do is make changes in his Rangers team if he feels that someone isn’t 100% or that the pattern of the game might not suit certain individuals.

What the Gers boss also does is rotate his squad to keep it fresh, when injuries allow, or make early subs in games if things aren’t going to plan.

Everything Philippe Clement does, he does for a reason and, when he says that he needs more depth in his Rangers squad, there is a reason why with Kris Boyd agreeing on Sky Sports that competition is crucial – getting a bonus Chris Sutton put-down in for good measure too.

Philippe Clement finally has options in Rangers squad

It’s not like it is Dick Advocaat’s Rangers squad where he had too many good players fighting for minutes.

Clement has found a way to get the most out of every player in his squad and by giving them his backing, he has raised the level of performance.

When asked by Eilidh Barbour on Sky Sports if having more options is benefiting the manager, Boyd said:

“I think that’s been a problem at Rangers for a number of years and we’ve been vocal on the recruitment.

“The ones coming in weren’t good enough to challenge those in the starting XI.

“At big clubs you have to have competition for places.

“Not one player in that team is guaranteed to start every week.”

Sutton, as always, couldn’t help himself and suggested that James Tavernier and Jack Butland probably are, not trying to make a point just to be facetious.

Not that Boyd was having any of it:

“Well, McCrorie started in the cup last week so, unlucky!”

For all that Dujon Sterling and Robby McCrorie might not be as good as the players in front of them in their preferred positions, you can’t argue that the pair of them can’t be trusted to do a job, which was the point Boyd was making.

Sutton knew this of course but, as always, couldn’t help himself as part of Sky’s Punch and Judy Scottish football coverage.

If Clement can upgrade on players like Scott Wright and Rabbi Matondo in the wide areas, his job will be made an awful lot easier though.
