Philippe Clement was wanting his Rangers team to be brave and to believe that they weren’t underdogs against Man Utd.
The manager had an availability problem with his squad due to Europa League restrictions, injury and suspension but managed to recall James Tavernier and Leon Balogun to the line-up.
With a place in the top eight at stake and an extra £1m or two, here are your Rangers player ratings for the game with Man Utd.

Rangers player ratings vs Man Utd
Rangers were putting a lot of faith into the starting XI, given the lack of depth, here’s how they scored :
Jack Butland – 7
Looked rusty dealing with corners and set-pieces with Man Utd throwing in-swingers on top of the Rangers goal.
At 6ft 5inches tall, he needs to be more commanding given that his defence isn’t the most physical.
Stunning stop against Amad Diallo when the former loanee was put clean through and then tipped a spectacular effort from Lisandro Martinez just before half-time.
Shocker to gift Man Utd the opener, he’s done it before this season and got away with it, didn’t this time, unforgivable from one of the most experienced players in the squad.
Attempted to make up for it with a series of fine stops after his mistake though.
Jefte – 3
Was roasted by Amad Diallo in pre-season to the extent that Nils Koppen’s decision to chase the Brazilian was questioned.
Looked to press Man Utd’s in-form winger a lot quicker and stop him from cutting inside but tired as the game went on.
Switched off when he needed to concentrate the most in injury time to leave Bruno Fernandes unmarked to score the winning goal.
James Tavernier – 8
Looked like a player who hadn’t played against this level of opposition for some time and Alejandro Garnacho gave the Light Blues skipper a torrid time in the opening stages.
Grew into the game though and became a key figure at the back.
Well-timed block on Joshua Zirzkee as half-time approached and couldn’t have done much more as an auxillary centre-half.

Robin Propper – 7
Tasked with organising the defence against a busy and mobile forward line with creative players behind them.
Was penalised for holding Zirzkee trying to out-muscle the powerful forward.
Couple of brave blocks as he tried to keep Man Utd out almost on his own at times.
Leon Balogun – 5
Usual assured appearance from the veteran and tried to carry the ball out of Man Utd’s initial press as the home side went man to man but had to be replaced at half-time.
Nicolas Raskin – 7
Showed that he can compete at this level and was more than a match for this level of opposition looking to win the ball at both ends of the park.
Should have opened the scoring but lost his footing at the vital moment and could only hit a tame effort straight at the keeper.
Outnumbered in the second half with Bailey Rice joining him and Nedim Bajrami offering nothing but was still pushing his team on late in the game.
Connor Barron – 5
Quietly effective alongside Nicolas Raskin looking to close gaps in midfield and keep his passing simple.
Took a sore one competing for a 50/50 as half-time approached but managed to run it off.
Nedim Bajrami – 3
Fast becoming the hide and seek champion in Rangers midfield. Gave the ball away in defensive areas and couldn’t make anything happen at the other end of the park either when he was in possession.
As one of the more experienced players, Clement must’ve been fuming.
Ridvan Yilmaz – 2
Gave cheap possession away almost every time he had possession, however, was also one of Rangers most dangerous players taking up some great positions behind down the left flank in the first half.
Had a clear sight of goal at 0-0 shortly after Raskin’s effort, controlled the volley well but couldn’t angle his effort away from the goalkeeper.
Struggled badly when he moved to right-back.

Hamza Igamane – 7
Looked dangerous when he got the ball in open play and space to play into and was Rangers most likely player to make something happen.
Saw one long-range effort that was heading for the target deflect wide as he looked to make an early name for himself.
Showed he can be useful in his own box too with a goal-line clearance.
Vaclav Cerny – 6
Rangers couldn’t get him on the ball often enough higher up the park because, when he had space out on the right, he caused Man Utd problems and was close to linking up with teammates.
Limped off in the second half which is the last thing that Clement will have wanted to see.
Substitutes
Bailey Rice – 7
What an occasion to come off the bench and could have became an immediate hero with his first touch but blazed a half-volley over the bar.
Showed some nice touches and passing that impressed Rio Ferdinand.
Ross McCausland – 5
On at half-time for Leon Balogun with a shuffle in defence seeing the Northern Ireland international play on the left wing.
Findlay Curtis – 6
After making his debut against Fraserburgh, the teenage winger had an almighty step up for his second Rangers appearance.
Didn’t look overawed and worked his socks off.
Cyriel Dessers – 8
Had one involvement, carried the ball 40 yards, beat his defender and left Doohan with no chance for Rangers third – take heed Vaclav Cerny.
Dessers does, what Dessers does, and when it mattered most he produced a moment of incredible magic with what must be the best goal of his career.
The first touch was world class, and the finish was even better, it’s just a shame that Rangers couldn’t hold out.
Leon King – 5
On too late to have any impact.
