Rangers in Malmo Champions League blow as fans ruled out of away leg

Rangers fans have been dealt a Champions League away day blow with a trip to Sweden and Malmo off the cards under current coronavirus rules.

The Gers are set to face Swedish champions Malmo FF in the third round of Champions League qualifying after the Swedes overcame Scandinavian rivals HJK Helsinki.

But despite news that double-vaccinated Rangers fans could’ve travelled to Helsinki, this will not be the case in Malmo.

Under current rules – as per the UK Government website – the Swedish government has imposed an entry ban on travel from the UK to Sweden.

Only those who are exempt from the existing travel ban will be allowed to enter the country with testing requirements still in place.

Those from within the European Economic Area – of which the UK is not a member – will be able to enter if they can provide proof of an EU Covid certificate with current rules set to remain in place until the 31^st of August 2021 [Swedish Police].

This means fans will be unable to travel for the clash – which is likely to have no away allocation – although we suspect a few Swedish bears might manage to make the trip.

Had Rangers played in Finland, the Scandinavian nation has announced plans to open the country to fully vaccinated UK travellers.

Finland will not require quarantine or testing requirements from British visitors and travellers must have had their complete vaccination course at least 14 days prior to arrival.

Those who visit must present their NHS app, Covid Pass or a vaccination status letter on arrival. Read more via Visit Finland.
