You don’t have to tell Cyriel Dessers that Rangers fans can be a fickle bunch.

One week any Rangers player can be the worst to ever pull on the famous blue, the next they’re a world-beater for whom football ain’t ready.

But ultimately, all Rangers fans want is winning football and after a year at the club big things are expected of Cyriel Dessers this season.

It is a make or break campaign for the Ibrox number nine and heading into the Champions League qualifier with Dynamo Kiev you could hear the knives being sharpened.

With Philippe Clement shutting down one line of questioning in the pre-match press conference, the pressure was clearly on Cyriel Dessers to deliver.

And deliver he did.

Rangers fans react to Dessers goals

Rangers fans have been guilty of heaping the pressure on Cyriel Dessers over the last 12 months but when you wear the number 9 jersey you need to score goals.

It weighs heavy on most but Dessers – amid the tirade of abuse at times – has grown into it and played a key role against Dynamo Kiev.

Scoring with virtually the final touch of the ball to earn Rangers a 1-1 draw in the away leg, it’s all to play for at Hampden next week.

And Rangers have wasted no time in lauding the hitman on social media with Dessers the toast of Govan.

One supporter claimed he was ‘happy’ for Cyriel Dessers because ‘n matter how many chances’ he ‘always comes back for more’.

Another referred to Dessers as ‘immense’ and hailed the hitman for running the line ‘tirelessly’ throughout the game.

It’s clear the striker is winning over Rangers fans with one saying ‘go on big Cyriel’ and others simply saying ‘nice one Cyriel, nice one son’.

And what about the hitman’s celebration?

Cyriel Dessers put his hand in his pocket and put up a pistol sign in the style of viral Turkish Olympic shooter Yusuf Dikec.

That ultra-cool moment hasn’t been lost on supporters either.

Gers striker wants more ‘recognition’

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has also been speaking to BBC Sport after scoring what could prove a crucial goal against Dynamo Kiev.

The Gers have their eyes fixed on qualification for the Champions League and now hold home advantage in the second leg with the score neatly poised at 1-1.

Claiming that it would be nice to get a little more recognition, Cyriel insists he’s just focused on delivering for Rangers.

“I don’t have to answer people,” said Dessers. “I’m just doing my job for the team, for the manager, for myself and that’s the only thing that matters.

“Obviously it would be nice to get a little bit recognition for what you do but I get the recognition inside the building and that’s the most important.

“There are always some reactions from media or a small part of the fans but obviously the biggest part of the fans they give me a lot of support, a lot love.

“I happy to repay them back in these moments with an important goal in the last minute.”
