Wednesday night was a disappointing one for Rangers supporters. There was a feeling of expectation at Ibrox ahead of the game against Aberdeen. Firstly, for a win. Secondly, that fan favourite Alfredo Morelos would break a goalscoring record.
Unfortunately, neither came to pass.
Yet, there is a difference between disappointment and disaster, and Wednesday was certainly not the latter.
The standard of performance and result at Ibrox this season has raised expectations. That isn’t a bad thing, they should be high at this club.
However, one loss at the beginning of December constitutes a very minor setback. The Gers were rampant in November, winning all of their league fixtures.
But, that can’t happen all of the time. It’s inevitable that there will be bad performances and bad results at times during the season. The key thing, is keeping them to a bare minimum.
Celtic failed to fully capitalise on the slip up, and while they still have a game in hand, to be level at this stage is a major improvement.
The key, now, is how the players react to the defeat. The trip to Dundee on Sunday, brings to an end a tricky run of domestic fixtures. If Rangers can emerge from matches against Livi, Hearts, Aberdeen and Dundee, with nine points, it can still be considered a job well done.
I am sure Steven Gerrard will be stressing that point to his players.
One result doesn’t define a league season, its about how you bounce back a few days later. That will give an insight into the true title credentials of this promising side.
