‘It’s not possible’… Philippe Clement shares what irked him after Rangers beat St Mirren

Philippe Clement slammed St Mirren’s pitch after Rangers secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Buddies in Paisley.

And the Belgian claims that not even the likes of Barcelona or Manchester City would be able to put on a show on the surface Rangers ground out a win on today.

Cyriel Dessers continued his fine form in front of goal with another strike which in the end won what was a scrappy contest at the SMiSA Stadium.

But the triumph still means three points no matter how they were gained and Rangers are now two points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership who play Ross County this afternoon.

Clement spoke to Sky Sports after the game and praised his team’s resilience to grind out a victory in difficult circumstances. But he had harsh words for the condition of the playing surface which seemed to quite rightly irk the manager.

Philippe Clement said: “It was a tough afternoon but it’s because of the circumstances. Everybody sees on that on that kind of pitch, you can’t play football. Even if you put Barcelona or Man City on that pitch, you will not see fine football.

“It’s not possible and it is a little bit of a pity for the game and also for spectators because it is like kick and rush. I don’t think people want to see those kind of games but the most important thing is that the team adapted.

“We played a different game than we normally we play but we win and we had control of the game. We only missed the second goal to really kill it off in the second-half. But we were never really in trouble and that is important to take the three points and go home.

“For sure, if you want to win trophies and get a lot of points then you need to adapt to situations. We train in better circumstances so the players showed their resilience, hunger and desire to change to get a result and that is major.”
